A mapped introduction to LAs Victorian mansions Curbed LA

It sounds more like modern times than 1915, but Dr. Roy Lanterman was ahead of his time when he wanted to build a fireproof bungalow made of reinforced concrete. The Doheny Mansion is on the Doheny campus of Mount St. Mary's College at 10 Chester Place, just south of downtown LA. It's in the South Adams area, which is full of more beautiful, classic mansions. Built in 1899 for the artist and socialite Sarah Posey, this fantastical home was bought only a year after Posey settled in by the legendary oil magnate EL Doheny and his wife Estelle. It was during the Victorian era, from 1837 to 1901, that Los Angeles transformed from a small, dusty Mexican outpost into a Gilded Age American boom town. Thousands of homes were built during this time, and though many were lost, the structures mapped here survive.

Despite being a low-budget production, the movie boasts impressive practical effects.

They speed toward the barricade, guns blazing as the police return fire, fading to black. Some scenes were excised or trimmed to maintain a tight pace and keep the intensity of the film intact. Zombie created a niche film that appeals to fans of unconventional and boundary-pushing horror. The limited time frame challenged the cast and crew to efficiently bring the twisted story to life. The movie spawned a series of sequels, including The Devil’s Rejects and 3 from Hell, delving deeper into the disturbing world of the Firefly family.

Meanwhile, Baby's father, Captain Spaulding, decides to rendezvous with Baby and Otis. His truck runs out of gas on the way, and he frightens a boy and assaults the boy's mother before stealing her car. Back at the motel, Otis rapes Roy's wife Gloria and demands Adam and Roy come with him on an errand. With its unique blend of horror and dark humor, House of 1000 Corpses has solidified its place in the annals of horror cinema. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s definitely worth checking out, but be prepared for a wild ride into the twisted mind of Rob Zombie. The intricately designed set pieces add to the unsettling atmosphere and provide insight into the twisted minds of the characters.

Don, a former policeman, is called to the scene to help the deputies search. They arrive at the Firefly house and Wydell questions Mother Firefly about the missing teens. Mother Firefly shoots Wydell in the head and kills him; Don and Steve are then killed by Otis when they find more bodies of missing cheerleaders in the barn, along with a barely conscious Mary. House of 1000 Corpses is a 2003 American black comedy horror film[4][5] written, co-scored, and directed by Rob Zombie in his directorial debut, and the first film in the Firefly film series.

The film’s title is a nod to a ride at Universal Studios.

House of 1000 Corpses is a cult classic horror film that has captivated audiences since its release in 2003. Directed by Rob Zombie, the movie takes viewers on a chilling journey into the twisted minds of the sadistic Firefly family. With its unique blend of horror, gore, and dark humor, House of 1000 Corpses has become a staple among horror movie enthusiasts. This multicolored, turreted, upper middle class house was originally built in 1887 at the base of Mount Washington by real estate developer George Morgan.

Designed by Pierre Koenig in 1959 from a concept developed by the house's owner Buck Stahl, it's also called Case Study House #22. This house is in an area of the Silver Lake neighborhood called The Colony, where you'll find a number of Neutra designs on and around Neutra Place. You can see them from the outside by touring off Earl Street between Silver Lake Boulevard and Glendale Boulevard. The original structure was designed and built by architect Richard Neutra with a no-interest loan from a Dutch philanthropist. Schindler came to California to work for Frank Lloyd Wright and supervise construction of the Hollyhock House.

The site that is currently known as the Annenberg Community Beach House was originally a five-acre oceanfront property belonging to William Randolph Hearst and his mistress, Marion Davies. The lavish compound was designed in the Georgian Colonial-style by architects Julia Morgan and William Flannery and featured a three-story main house, three detached guest houses, servants' quarters, dog kennels, tennis courts and two swimming pools. The legendary parties held at the compound during Hearst and Davies’ tenure had guest lists that often numbered in the thousands.

Diehard fans can indulge in an Eames tradition, a picnic in the house meadow, for $750 (1-4 adults). Rob Zombie’s love for classic horror films influenced the style and tone of House of 1000 Corpses, creating a chilling homage to the genre. Although House of 1000 Corpses is a cult classic that made Zombie a household name in the horror genre, the director himself actually doesn't like the film very much. Robert Bartleh Cummings, more commonly known as Rob Zombie, came to public prominence in the early '90s as the frontman of the heavy metal band White Zombie.

Shortly after, a mysterious figure appears hidden in some overgrowth and shoots out their vehicle's tire with a shotgun. The group thinks it is just a blown out tire and so Baby takes Bill to her family's house to get a tow truck. Moments later, Baby's half-brother, Rufus, picks up the stranded passengers and takes them to the family home. Despite its oversized fame, it's a modest-sized house, with floor-to-ceiling glass walls and a 300-degree-plus view of the city of Los Angeles.

Whether you’re a fan of Rob Zombie’s unique directing style or simply enjoy a good scare, House of 1000 Corpses delivers. From its impressive set design to its thrilling plot twists, this film keeps viewers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. House of 1000 Corpses won't go down in history as the most commercially successful horror movie of all time, nor the most critically acclaimed. This hardcore horror film's style plays like a terrifying music video, providing a roller coaster ride of gruesomely colorful scenes. To the squeamish, this movie can come off as shocking, repulsive, and downright unwatchable, due to its gory nature. It does, after all, contain torturous mental abuse, bloody murder, and, for good measure, necrophilia.

From psychological horror to slasher elements, the movie weaves together various styles to create a truly unique viewing experience. The graphic content and disturbing scenes in the film sparked debates about the boundaries of horror and artistic expression. Zombie not only directed the movie but also wrote the twisted script, showcasing his talent as a filmmaker. People tend to be their own worst critics — although critics have plenty of scathing things to say about House of 1000 Corpses.

The Gamble House in Pasadena is widely regarded as a masterpiece of the Arts and Crafts style. The three-story house and its furnishings were designed by Charles and Henry Greene in 1908 for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter & Gamble Company. Today, the house is owned by the City of Pasadena and operated by the University of Southern California School of Architecture.
